Original German West Wall Medal (Deutsches Schutzwall-Ehrenzeichen) complete with its period issue packet. Instituted on August 2nd, 1939, the medal was awarded to personnel involved in the construction and defense of the West Wall fortification system, commonly referred to as the Siegfried Line.
The bronze-toned medal features crossed sword and shovel devices beneath a national eagle and swastika on the obverse, symbolizing both military defense and labor service connected to the massive border fortification project. The reverse bears the inscription:
“Für Arbeit zum Schutze Deutschlands”
(“For Work in the Defense of Germany”)
The medal remains suspended from its original ribbon showing the correct brown and white striped pattern associated with the award. Included is the original issue packet marked “Deutsches Schutzwall-Ehrenzeichen,” with retailer marking to the reverse for Carl Poellath of Schrobenhausen.
Condition is very good overall with attractive age toning and honest period wear. Ribbon shows light handling wear consistent with age, while the packet retains strong printed detail and solid structural integrity.
A desirable complete award set and an excellent addition to any Third Reich medal or fortification-related militaria collection.
