Historical Note
Karl Dönitz (1891–1980) commanded Germany’s U-boat arm (U-Bootwaffe) during the early years of the Battle of the Atlantic and developed the famous Wolfpack (Rudel) tactics employed against Allied convoys. In January 1943, he succeeded Grand Admiral Erich Raeder as Commander-in-Chief of the Kriegsmarine. Following Adolf Hitler’s death on 30 April 1945, Dönitz briefly served as Head of State of Germany, leading the short-lived Flensburg Government until Germany’s final surrender in May 1945.
