Original German Third Reich-era postcard depicting the Great Dining Hall (Großer Speisesaal) of the famous Platterhof at Obersalzberg, above Berchtesgaden.
The Platterhof was a historic hotel located within the Obersalzberg area that became closely associated with the Third Reich leadership complex surrounding Adolf Hitler’s nearby Berghof.
The photograph provides an excellent interior view of the large dining room, showing its rows of dining tables, substantial columns, chandeliers and period furnishings.
The front is captioned:
“Großer Speisesaal im Platterhof”
The reverse is printed “Gasthaus ‘Der Platterhof’ – Obersalzberg über Berchtesgaden” and identifies the publisher as Deutsche Kunst- und Verlagsanstalt G.m.b.H., Dortmund, Stubengasse 29.
The postcard is unused and unmailed, with a clean reverse aside from a small handwritten collector/reference number.
This is an original pre-1945 postcard rather than a postwar view. Period material bearing the Platterhof name is documented from the Third Reich era, including surviving material dated between 1928 and 1945.
