Original German Iron Cross 2nd Class 1939 (Eisernes Kreuz II. Klasse) complete with period suspension ribbon. Re-instituted by Adolf Hitler on September 1st, 1939, the Iron Cross remained one of Germany’s most iconic military decorations of the Second World War and was awarded for acts of bravery, leadership, or combat merit in the face of the enemy.
The three-piece construction cross features a magnetic iron core with black finish framed by a silvered alloy border. The obverse displays the central swastika above the date “1939,” while the reverse retains the traditional “1813” commemorative date honoring the original establishment of the award during the Napoleonic Wars.
This example is unmarked, a characteristic commonly encountered on wartime-produced Iron Crosses. The piece retains attractive overall finish with good contrast between the blackened core and silvered frame. Ribbon appears to be period and remains well mounted to the suspension ring.
Condition is very good overall with light age wear, minor finish wear to high points, and natural age toning consistent with wartime manufacture and storage. A solid original combat award with excellent display appeal.
An essential centerpiece for any German WWII militaria collection.
