Original Italian WWII military propaganda postcard featuring a striking color satirical illustration depicting two Italian soldiers overpowering a caricatured British figure, presented as an obese and helpless enemy.
One soldier restrains the British figure from behind while the second confronts him from the front, creating an intentionally exaggerated and theatrical scene typical of wartime propaganda artwork. The large “1941” appearing prominently in the background places the illustration firmly within the wartime context.
The artwork is signed in the lower right by the illustrator, although the signature is difficult to identify with certainty.
Of particular interest is the reverse, which is headed:
“P.N.F. Dopolavoro Forze Armate – Cartolina Postale”
This associates the card with the Partito Nazionale Fascista (PNF) and its recreational/welfare organization serving members of the Italian Armed Forces, rather than being simply a commercially produced humorous postcard.
Even more importantly from a collector standpoint, this example was actually used during the war. The reverse retains handwritten correspondence and a clear Italian military postal cancellation dated 1941. The cancellation appears to read “POSTA MILITARE N. 47”, although I would classify that postal-unit number as probable rather than absolutely confirmed from the photograph.
The reverse is additionally printed “Carpiotti – Roma”, identifying the Rome printer/publisher.
The combination of its vivid color artwork, overt anti-British wartime propaganda, PNF/Dopolavoro military association and genuine 1941 postal usage makes this considerably more interesting than an unused generic Italian propaganda card.
Condition: Good original wartime condition. The front retains strong and attractive colors with moderate edge and surface wear. The reverse exhibits considerable age toning, staining and handling wear consistent with actual wartime postal use. Handwritten period correspondence and military postal cancellation remain present.
