An original German WWII Eastern Front Medal 1941/42 (Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42), complete with its original ribbon. This authentic wartime example is manufactured in zinc and displays an attractive untouched patina consistent with age and service.
Commonly known by collectors as the Ostmedaille or “Frozen Meat Medal”, it was instituted on May 26, 1942, and awarded to German and Axis personnel who participated in the brutal winter campaign on the Eastern Front between November 15, 1941, and April 15, 1942.
The obverse features the Wehrmacht eagle above a steel helmet resting on a stick grenade, while the reverse bears the inscription “Winterschlacht im Osten 1941/42” (“Winter Battle in the East 1941/42”) above a crossed sword and laurel branch.
